Code B / Code 8

The standard light motor vehicle licence for vehicles under 3 500 kg. The retail segment’s product.

Code C1 / Code 10

Code EC / Code 14

The articulated combination licence. Lessons are quoted from R370 an hour and the realistic all-in cost is R14 800 to R30 000. A Code C1 licence must be held first.

DLCA

Grade A / B / C instructor

Provincial instructor grades. Grade A may teach any code and requires an EC manual and Code A licence; Grade C is limited to codes A1, A and B. Grade A instructors are materially scarcer.

Learnership

A structured, accredited training programme combining theory and workplace practice, funded through the skills levy system and delivered against registered unit standards.

NaTIS

The National Traffic Information System. A registered school’s account can book driving tests on a learner’s behalf and can surface earlier dates than the public-facing portal.

PrDP

Professional Driving Permit, required for drivers of goods vehicles above a threshold and for passenger vehicles. Heavy training vehicles must be PrDP compliant.
