Market sizing follows a top-down structure cross-checked against store economics. The total addressable market, South Africa’s spaza and informal retail sector, is estimated at around R178 billion. The serviceable addressable market, Soweto township convenience retail within MzanziMart’s broad reach, runs to several billion rand. The serviceable obtainable market, the store’s Year-5 revenue of roughly R4.9 million, is a tiny fraction of that: a single store in a catchment of a few thousand households.
NoteDemand is not the binding constraint — execution and catchment are
Because the store’s revenue is a minuscule share of the market, the binding constraint on the business is not demand but execution within its local catchment, winning and retaining loyal shoppers within roughly a two-kilometre radius, driving footfall and basket size, controlling costs and shrinkage, and out-competing nearby stores. Market risk is therefore predominantly local competition, execution and cost risk, addressed in Sections 5, 8 and 18.
Bottom-up cross-check — footfall and basket
The revenue reconciles bottom-up against catchment economics. The plan builds from roughly 190 customers a day at an average basket of about R42 in Year 1 toward around 315 customers a day by Year 5, supported by a loyal base growing from 1,500 to over 3,000 regular shoppers, extended trading hours, a widening range and growing value-added services. These are realistic numbers for a busy, well-located store in a dense Soweto catchment, the revenue is driven by frequent, repeat, everyday purchases rather than large individual transactions.

The revenue plan reconciles directly to store-level drivers: customers per day multiplied by average basket multiplied by trading days ties back to the preserved headline revenue in every year. This grounds the projections in tangible, manageable operating levers, footfall and basket, rather than abstract growth rates, and makes clear exactly what the store must achieve each day to hit its numbers.
