Operations & Technology

Operations centre on a single, well-run store in Orlando East trading seven days a week from 06:00 to 21:00, supported by modern point-of-sale technology, disciplined inventory management, reliable supplier relationships and robust security. The operating model is built for consistency, availability and cost control, the fundamentals that make a convenience store succeed.

The operating model

  • Extended trading hours, seven days a week (06:00–21:00) — capturing early-morning, after-work and weekend demand when customers most need a convenient local store.
  • Modern point-of-sale and payment technology — accepting cash and electronic payments, powering the loyalty programme, and generating the sales and stock data that drive disciplined buying and range decisions.
  • Disciplined inventory management — buying well from Cash & Carry and wholesalers, keeping fast-moving lines consistently in stock, managing the cold chain, and turning inventory over roughly monthly to protect cash and freshness.
  • Robust security and loss prevention — CCTV, contract security and stock controls to manage the theft and shrinkage that are a material reality of township retail.

The daily operating rhythm

Consistency comes from routine. The store runs on a disciplined daily and weekly rhythm that keeps shelves full, the cold chain safe, cash controlled and the store clean and welcoming.

Supplier strategy

Inventory will be sourced from reputable wholesalers, Cash & Carry outlets and FMCG distributors to secure competitive pricing, consistent quality and dependable availability. Building long-term supplier relationships, and taking advantage of the growing willingness of major FMCG brands to support and supply spaza retailers directly, will help secure favourable purchasing terms, reliable delivery and better margins over time. As a single store, MzanziMart’s buying power is limited, so disciplined supplier management and range selection are essential to protecting margin.

Electricity, cold chain and resilience

Two operational realities require particular attention. First, electricity: load-shedding and power interruptions threaten the cold chain (refrigeration and freezers), point-of-sale uptime and security systems, so the store budgets for backup power (an inverter and battery system) and energy-efficient equipment. Second, the cold chain itself: reliable refrigeration is essential both to protect stock value and to meet food-safety standards. The equipment budget, the backup-power provision and disciplined maintenance are built around keeping the store trading reliably and safely through disruptions.

Analyst flagAvailability, shrinkage, electricity and cost control are the operational make-or-break

A convenience store lives or dies on the fundamentals: keeping fast-moving lines in stock, controlling theft and spoilage, keeping the cold chain and tills running through power cuts, and holding down costs. Shrinkage, security and electricity are real, material costs in township retail, and a single store has limited buying power. The plan budgets explicitly for shrinkage, security, backup power and disciplined inventory management, but lenders and investors should treat stock availability, loss prevention, power resilience and cost control as the operational conditions of the plan, not afterthoughts.
