Jump to section

Avian influenza is the risk that can close the farm, so biosecurity is designed in as five layers of defence

1 Perimeter

2 Gate

3 House

4 Flock

5 Response

Game-proof fence, single controlled gate, no open water, wild-bird-proof houses and feed silos.

Vehicle wheel and chassis spray, visitor log, staff shower-in and farm-only clothing and boots.

Single-age houses, dedicated attendants, foot baths, rodent and fly control, no equipment sharing.

Pullets from an accredited rearer with full vaccination record; water sanitation; weekly vet-reviewed mortality and lay data.

State-vet compartment registration, 24-hour reporting protocol, mortality disposal plan, R1.5m minimum cash reserve.

Routine health programme

What the plan does not assume

Newcastle disease and infectious bronchitis boosters in lay, per vet schedule

Monthly serology and salmonella monitoring; egg-quality checks at grading

Budget of R0.42 per hen per month for vaccines, medication and consulting vet

No HPAI vaccination (permitted in SA only under strict state-veterinary conditions), no insurance recovery and no state compensation for culled birds. The stress case on slide 34 shows the unmitigated cost of losing one house.
