Location Analysis — Piketberg
Piketberg is situated in the Swartland region of the Western Cape, approximately 130 kilometres north of Cape Town along the N7 national highway. The region is characterised by a Mediterranean climate with cool, wet winters (average minimum temperatures of 6–8°C) and warm,…
5.1 Geographic and Climatic Advantages
Piketberg is situated in the Swartland region of the Western Cape, approximately 130 kilometres north of Cape Town along the N7 national highway. The region is characterised by a Mediterranean climate with cool, wet winters (average minimum temperatures of 6–8°C) and warm, dry summers (average maximum temperatures of 30–34°C), creating optimal conditions for garlic cultivation. Garlic requires a vernalisation period of cool temperatures to stimulate bulb formation, followed by warm, dry conditions for maturation and harvesting — precisely the climatic profile offered by Piketberg.
5.2 Soil Conditions
The Piketberg area features deep, well-drained sandy loam soils with a pH range of 6.0–7.0, which is ideal for garlic production. The soil structure facilitates root penetration and bulb development while minimising waterlogging risk. Prior to planting, the Company will conduct comprehensive soil analysis and implement a soil conditioning programme including lime application (where required), organic matter incorporation, and micronutrient supplementation to optimise fertility.
5.3 Water Resources and Irrigation
Reliable irrigation is critical to commercial garlic production. The Piketberg area benefits from established irrigation schemes fed by the Misverstand Dam and Berg River system. SilverClove Farms will install a modern drip irrigation system covering the full 70-hectare cultivation area, providing precise water delivery that minimises consumption while optimising plant growth. Annual water requirement is estimated at approximately 5,000–6,000 cubic metres per hectare, well within the available allocation from local water schemes.
5.4 Logistics and Market Access
Piketberg’s strategic location offers significant logistical advantages. The farm is approximately 130 km from the Cape Town Fresh Produce Market (the second-largest in South Africa), 140 km from the Port of Cape Town for export shipments, and directly accessible via the N7 highway connecting to the national road network. This positioning enables cost-effective distribution to both domestic and export markets while maintaining cold chain integrity for perishable produce.
