NexusShield Digital Insurance (Pty) Ltd (“NexusShield”) is a technology-driven commercial insurance company focused on providing digital-first insurance products for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and corporates in South Africa. Headquartered in Johannesburg, the country’s financial capital and the largest hub for fintech and insurance innovation on the African continent, NexusShield combines deep insurance underwriting expertise with cutting-edge fintech technology to deliver a transformative customer experience.
1.1 The Opportunity
South Africa’s insurance market, valued at approximately USD 50 billion in gross written premiums, represents the most developed insurance ecosystem on the African continent. Despite this maturity, significant inefficiencies persist in the SME insurance segment. Over 2.6 million registered SMEs face complex underwriting processes, manual claims handling, expensive premiums, and limited digital access. Approximately 60% of SMEs remain underinsured or entirely uninsured, representing a total addressable market opportunity of an estimated ZAR 89 billion annually.
1.2 The Solution
NexusShield addresses these market failures through a cloud-native digital insurance platform that leverages artificial intelligence, blockchain technology, machine learning, and API-based embedded insurance capabilities. The platform enables:
-
Instant digital insurance quotations delivered within two minutes
-
AI-powered risk assessment using alternative data sources and predictive analytics
-
Embedded insurance distribution via APIs integrated into banking, payment, and accounting platforms
-
Automated claims processing with AI document review and satellite data integration
-
Blockchain-enabled smart contracts for transparent policy management and automatic payouts

The business expects to achieve profitability (positive net income) in Year 3 and is forecast to generate ZAR 288 million in net income by Year 5, representing a net margin of approximately 16%.
