7.2 Breed Strategy

The primary breed will be Bonsmara, supplemented by Beefmaster. Both are South African-developed composite breeds combining Bos indicus heat tolerance with British breed carcass quality. The Bonsmara is the most popular beef breed in South Africa, accounting for over 30% of SA Stud Book registrations, and is specifically adapted to the bushveld conditions of the North West Province.

  • Cow Herd: 400 Bonsmara and Beefmaster cows, sourced from accredited breeders with above-average breeding values for weaning weight, fertility, and docility.

  • Bulls: 16 registered bulls (1:25 bull-to-cow ratio), selected for growth, feed efficiency, and carcass merit using Breedplan EBVs (Estimated Breeding Values).

  • Genetic Improvement: Annual bull selection based on Breedplan performance data; AI (artificial insemination) programme for top 20% of cows using elite genetics.
