Braai packs are the single highest-margin product category in township butchery retail. By combining multiple cuts into a curated, ready-to-braai package, the butchery transforms commodity meat into a premium convenience product. The strategy exploits the fact that consumers evaluate braai packs on total pack price and perceived value rather than per-kilogram pricing, allowing significantly higher blended margins.

The Economics of Braai Packs

A braai pack priced at R299 that feeds 4–6 people typically contains a strategic mix of higher-cost showcase items (like T-bone steaks or lamb chops) and lower-cost volume fillers (like boerewors, chicken drumsticks, and marinated wings). The customer perceives exceptional value because the showcase items alone would cost nearly the pack price if purchased separately, while the filler items deliver the margin.

Braai Pack Marketing Tactics

Braai packs will be the centrepiece of Kasi Prime Butchery’s marketing effort. The display of freshly assembled, visually appealing braai packs in the front window of the store is the single most effective way to convert foot traffic into sales. Additional tactics include WhatsApp broadcast lists announcing Friday and Saturday specials by Thursday afternoon, a loyalty card offering every 10th braai pack free, branded packaging with the Kasi Prime Butchery logo, and seasonal limited-edition packs tied to Heritage Day, Christmas, and major sporting events.

The braai pack station will be positioned prominently at the front of the store, visible from outside. Assembly will happen in view of customers, reinforcing freshness and quality. Staff will be trained to upsell braai packs to every customer purchasing individual cuts on Fridays and Saturdays.
