ESG & Sustainability
The ESG and sustainability agenda — the environmental stewardship, energy and refrigeration efficiency, and the social and governance commitments underpinning Polar Nexus.
Sustainability is integral to the Polar Nexus business model rather
than an overlay. The project advances environmental, social and
governance objectives that increasingly matter to lenders, customers and
regulators alike.
13.1 Environmental
- Clean energy: 3.2 MWp solar generation with
battery storage materially reduces grid dependence and carbon intensity,
with the renewable assets qualifying for the Section 12B
allowance. - Energy-efficient design: advanced insulation,
rapid-action doors, LED lighting and modern refrigeration minimise
energy per pallet. - Low-impact refrigerants: natural refrigerant
systems (ammonia/CO₂) avoid high global-warming-potential synthetic
gases. - Food loss reduction: the facility’s core
function — preventing spoilage — directly reduces the waste of food,
water, energy and emissions embedded in lost produce.
13.2 Social
- Employment: creation of approximately 110 direct
skilled and semi-skilled jobs, plus indirect employment through
contractors and suppliers. - Food security: reducing post-harvest losses
supports the availability and affordability of food. - Skills development: training in refrigeration,
food safety and logistics builds scarce technical capacity. - Transformation: alignment with broad-based black
economic empowerment (B-BBEE) objectives in ownership, procurement and
skills.
13.3 Governance
The Company will operate under a King IV-aligned governance framework
with an independent-leaning board, audit and risk oversight, transparent
reporting to investors and lenders, and rigorous health, safety and
environmental management. ESG performance will be measured and reported,
both because it is material to long-term value and because it is
increasingly a condition of institutional capital.
