4.1 Strategic Location Rationale
Lichtenburg, situated in the Ditsobotla Local Municipality of North West Province, is one of South Africa’s premier maize-producing areas. The selection of this location was based on a comprehensive multi-criteria analysis considering agronomic suitability, water availability, logistics infrastructure, proximity to markets, and local support services.
4.2 Agronomic Suitability
The Lichtenburg region benefits from semi-arid to subtropical climatic conditions that are well-suited to both dryland and irrigated maize production. The region receives average annual rainfall of 500-600mm, with the majority falling during the summer growing season (October to March). The fertile sandy-loam soils prevalent in the area offer excellent drainage characteristics and are well-suited to maize cultivation, with soil depths typically exceeding 1.2 metres.
| Location Factor | Assessment |
|---|---|
| Climate | Semi-arid to subtropical; 500-600mm annual rainfall |
| Soil Type | Fertile sandy-loam with good drainage; depth >1.2m |
| Water Access | Local dams and rivers; borehole potential confirmed |
| Frost Risk | Moderate; first frost typically late May |
| Distance to Gauteng Markets | ~250km via N4/N14 highway network |
| Nearest Rail Siding | Lichtenburg station (~12km from farm) |
| Agricultural Support | Full range of agri-suppliers, extension services, and cooperatives |
| Labour Availability | Adequate skilled and semi-skilled agricultural labour available locally |
4.3 Infrastructure & Logistics
The farm’s proximity to the N14 and N4 highway corridors provides efficient road access to key markets in Gauteng, which is home to the majority of South Africa’s milling companies and feed manufacturers. The Lichtenburg rail siding, approximately 12 kilometres from the farm, offers an alternative bulk transport option for larger consignments. Established agricultural service providers in the Lichtenburg area ensure reliable access to seeds, fertilisers, crop chemicals, equipment parts, and maintenance services.
