7.1 Biosecurity Framework
Biosecurity is the single most critical operational risk management factor in intensive pig production. The consequences of a disease incursion, particularly African Swine Fever (ASF), can be catastrophic, potentially resulting in the complete loss of the herd and extended production downtime. Pork Master Farms will implement a comprehensive, multi-layered biosecurity programme designed to minimise disease risk to the lowest practicable level.
7.2 Biosecurity Protocols
| Protocol Area | Measures | Responsibility |
|---|---|---|
| Perimeter Security | Electrified fencing, controlled access gates, CCTV surveillance | Farm Manager |
| Vehicle Control | Vehicle wash and disinfection station at entry; no unauthorized vehicles beyond parking | Security |
| Personnel Entry | Shower-in/shower-out policy; farm-issued clothing and footwear; 48-hour pig-free period | All Staff |
| Animal Quarantine | 30-day isolation for all incoming stock; testing protocol before herd entry | Veterinarian |
| Feed Biosecurity | Dedicated feed delivery area; heat treatment of certain feed ingredients | Feed Manager |
| Pest and Wild Animal Control | Rodent baiting programme; bird netting; wild pig exclusion fencing | Farm Manager |
| Dead Animal Disposal | Incineration or composting in designated biosecure area; no rendering collection on farm | Farm Manager |
| Record Keeping | Comprehensive visitor log; animal movement records; mortality records | Administrator |
7.3 Disease Risk Assessment
| Disease | Risk Level | Likelihood | Impact | Primary Mitigation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| African Swine Fever | Critical | Medium | Catastrophic | Strict biosecurity; wild pig exclusion |
| Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome | High | Medium | High | Vaccination; biosecurity; monitoring |
| Porcine Circovirus | Moderate | High | Moderate | Vaccination programme |
| E. coli / Clostridial diseases | Moderate | Medium | Moderate | Hygiene; vaccination; management |
| Internal and External Parasites | Low | High | Low | Routine treatment programme |
