8.2 Energy Infrastructure

Energy supply is a critical operational consideration given South Africa’s electricity supply challenges. AquaHarvest will implement a hybrid energy solution:

  • Solar PV Installation: 200 kW rooftop and ground-mounted solar array generating approximately 900 MWh per annum, offsetting 60–70% of grid electricity consumption

  • Diesel Generator Backup: 150 kVA diesel generator for emergency backup during extended load-shedding events

  • UPS Systems: Uninterruptible power supply for critical aeration and monitoring equipment (4-hour battery backup)

  • Estimated Annual Energy Cost Saving: R400,000–R600,000 from solar PV installation (payback: 5–6 years)
