Management & Organisational Structure
The executive leadership team, organisational design, and the human-capital strategy supporting BuildMart’s national scale-up.
10.1 Executive Leadership Team
BuildMart’s success depends on assembling an experienced leadership
team with deep expertise in South African retail operations, supply
chain management, and building materials merchandising. The executive
team will comprise a Chief Executive Officer with 15 or more years of
retail leadership experience, a Chief Financial Officer with a CA(SA)
qualification and prior experience in retail or construction sector
finance, a Chief Operating Officer with multi-site retail operations
experience, a Chief Commercial Officer responsible for procurement,
merchandising, and private-label development, and a Chief Technology
Officer with expertise in retail technology and e-commerce
platforms.
10.2 Organisational Design
The organisational structure follows a matrix model, with functional
centres of excellence (procurement, marketing, finance, HR, technology)
providing shared services to regional store clusters. Each region will
be led by a Regional Manager reporting to the COO, responsible for 5–8
stores and associated logistics operations. This structure balances the
benefits of centralised control (procurement leverage, brand
consistency, technology standards) with the flexibility required for
local market responsiveness.
10.3 Human Capital Strategy
BuildMart will create approximately 1,800 direct employment positions
by Year 7, with additional indirect employment through supplier
development and logistics partnerships. The human capital strategy
prioritises local recruitment, with a target of 80% of store-level
positions filled from the surrounding community. A comprehensive
training programme, delivered through a dedicated BuildMart Academy,
will provide product knowledge certification, sales skills development,
health and safety training, and management development pathways.
Compensation will be benchmarked at the 60th percentile of the retail
sector, supplemented by performance-based incentives, an employee share
ownership scheme, and comprehensive benefits including medical aid and
retirement fund contributions.
