Supply Chain & Operations

Procurement strategy, the distribution network, technology and systems architecture, and quality assurance and compliance across BuildMart’s integrated supply chain.

8.1 Procurement Strategy

BuildMart’s procurement strategy centres on direct manufacturer
relationships, eliminating intermediary margins and securing
preferential pricing through volume commitments. The company will
establish strategic partnerships with major local producers including
cement manufacturers (PPC, AfriSam, LafargeHolcim South Africa), steel
suppliers (ArcelorMittal South Africa, Macsteel), timber producers (York
Timber, Sappi), and plumbing and electrical distributors. International
sourcing for specialised products and tools will leverage relationships
with manufacturers in China, India, and Turkey, managed through a
dedicated import desk. A multi-supplier strategy across critical
categories ensures supply security and competitive tension among
vendors.

8.2 Distribution Network

Two central distribution centres will form the backbone of the
logistics network. The primary facility of approximately 15,000 square
metres will be located in Gauteng, positioned to serve stores across
Gauteng, North West, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga. A secondary facility of
approximately 8,000 square metres in the Western Cape will serve Cape
Town, Garden Route, and Eastern Cape operations. Regional cross-dock
facilities in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape will reduce last-mile
delivery costs. The distribution model targets 24-hour replenishment for
core categories and 48-hour replenishment for the extended range,
supporting inventory turnover of 8–10 times annually.

8.3 Technology & Systems
Architecture

An integrated technology stack will underpin all operations. The core
ERP system, based on SAP Business One or Microsoft Dynamics 365, will
provide centralised control over procurement, inventory, finance, and
human resources. Point-of-sale systems at each store will integrate with
the ERP for real-time sales data, inventory tracking, and demand
forecasting. A custom-built analytics platform will deliver predictive
demand modelling, dynamic pricing recommendations, and automated reorder
triggers. The e-commerce platform will be built on a modern headless
commerce architecture, supporting web and mobile interfaces with
integrated payment processing, delivery scheduling, and customer
relationship management. Total technology capital expenditure is
budgeted at ZAR 22.5 million, with annual operating costs of
approximately ZAR 8–12 million.

8.4 Quality Assurance &
Compliance

All products will be sourced in compliance with South African Bureau
of Standards (SABS) requirements and relevant National Building
Regulations. A dedicated quality assurance function will conduct
incoming goods inspection, supplier audits, and ongoing product testing.
Private-label products will undergo SABS certification before market
launch. The company will maintain ISO 9001 quality management system
certification within 18 months of operations, providing assurance to
institutional and government clients.
