ESG & Development Impact
The environmental, social and governance dimensions, the ESG monitoring and the SDG alignment underpinning SSHG.
Environmental, social and governance performance is integral to
SSHG’s strategy and to its appeal to development-finance institutions
and impact-oriented investors. The Group’s ESG framework is built into
the operating model rather than bolted on, and is overseen by the
board’s Social & Ethics Committee.
12.1 Environmental
| Initiative | Commitment / target |
|---|---|
| Regenerative agriculture | Working farm at the estate using regenerative practices; measurable soil-health and biodiversity outcomes |
| Zero-waste kitchens | Whole-ingredient menus, composting and waste-to-value programmes targeting <5% avoidable food waste |
| Sustainable seafood | 100% SASSI-green or equivalent sustainable seafood sourcing |
| Energy & carbon | On-site renewable generation, efficiency standards and a pathway to carbon-neutral operations |
| Water stewardship | Water-efficient design and re-use, critical in a water-scarce region |

targets.
12.2 Social
The Group is a meaningful job creator and skills developer. The
culinary academy provides scholarships to previously disadvantaged
learners, creating a transformative pathway into a high-skill,
high-demand profession. Supplier-development programmes bring small and
emerging black-owned producers into the supply chain, and
youth-employment and learnership initiatives build the broader
hospitality talent base.
| Social pillar | Target / commitment |
|---|---|
| Direct employment | 1,200+ permanent jobs at maturity across divisions |
| Academy scholarships | Fully funded scholarships for previously disadvantaged learners each cohort |
| Supplier & enterprise development | Procurement from emerging black-owned producers and SMMEs |
| Youth & learnerships | Structured learnerships and youth-employment pathways |
| Transformation | B-BBEE alignment across ownership, management and procurement |

targets.
12.3 Governance
Governance is anchored in the King IV framework, an
independent-majority board, and transparent ESG reporting. The Group
commits to traceability and ethical procurement across its supply chain,
robust food-safety and labour standards, and annual sustainability
reporting aligned to recognised frameworks — providing the disclosure
and accountability that institutional and development-finance investors
require.
Development-impact alignment — The combination of high-quality job
creation, transformative skills development, enterprise development for
emerging producers, and environmental stewardship positions SSHG
strongly for development-finance participation alongside commercial
equity and senior debt.
12.4 ESG Monitoring & SDG Alignment
The Group’s ESG initiatives map directly to the United Nations
Sustainable Development Goals and are tracked against defined metrics,
reported annually to the board’s Social & Ethics Committee and
disclosed to investors and development-finance partners.
