6.1 Cultivar Selection

Cultivar Hectares % of Orchard Harvest Window Market Characteristics
Hass 90 60% May – September Premium variety; dominant global demand; excellent shelf life
Fuerte 30 20% March – June Traditional green-skin; strong European demand; early season
Maluma 30 20% April – August South African cultivar; high yield; excellent export quality
TOTAL 150 100% March – September

The Hass cultivar accounts for approximately 80% of global avocado trade and commands premium pricing in all major markets. The inclusion of Fuerte and Maluma varieties provides harvest window extension (covering the full March–September export season) and cultivar diversification to mitigate biological risk.

6.2 Product Grading and Classification

All harvested fruit will be delivered to contracted export packhouses for professional grading, sizing, and packaging. The target grading profile is:

  • Class 1 Export Grade (target 65–70% of total harvest) – premium pricing, destined for European and UK retail

  • Class 2 Domestic Market Grade (20–25%) – sold through domestic fresh produce markets and retailers

  • Processing Grade (5–10%) – undersized or cosmetically imperfect fruit for oil extraction or guacamole processing

6.3 Quality and Certification Standards

The farm will implement and maintain the following certifications from Year 2:

  • GlobalG.A.P. (Good Agricultural Practices) – mandatory for European market access

  • SIZA (Sustainability Initiative of South Africa) – ethical trade and labour compliance

  • HACCP principles – food safety management in on-farm handling

  • Phytosanitary compliance – DALRRD (Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development) export protocols
