Social Impact & ESG Strategy
Healthcare access and community impact, environmental sustainability, governance and ethics, skills development and employment impact, and how social impact is measured.
13.1 Healthcare Access and Community Impact
HealthPlus is founded on the conviction that quality pharmacy
services should be accessible to all South Africans, not only those in
affluent urban areas. The Company’s expansion plan deliberately targets
a mix of premium shopping centres and community retail nodes, ensuring
that underserved suburban communities benefit from the same quality of
care, product range, and digital services available in major
metropolitan centres.
Each HealthPlus store will serve as a primary healthcare access
point, offering services that extend beyond traditional retail pharmacy.
In-store clinics will provide free blood pressure and blood glucose
screening during designated community health days, held monthly at each
location. Pharmacist-led medication counselling sessions will be
available without appointment for chronic medication patients, improving
adherence rates and health outcomes. These initiatives directly address
the shortage of public primary healthcare facilities in many South
African communities.
The Company estimates that each store will serve approximately
3,000–5,000 unique patients per month at maturity, with the 25-store
network reaching over 100,000 patients monthly by Year 5. This patient
reach positions HealthPlus as a meaningful contributor to South Africa’s
primary healthcare infrastructure, complementing rather than competing
with public sector facilities.
13.2 Environmental Sustainability
HealthPlus will implement a comprehensive environmental
sustainability programme aligned with global best practices and investor
expectations. Key initiatives include energy-efficient store design
incorporating LED lighting, smart climate control systems, and where
feasible, rooftop solar installations to reduce grid dependency. Clicks
Group’s recent deployment of South Africa’s first fleet of
zero-emission, pharma-compliant electric delivery vehicles demonstrates
the sector’s commitment to environmental innovation, and HealthPlus will
evaluate similar technologies for its delivery operations.
Pharmaceutical waste management is a critical environmental concern.
HealthPlus will partner with licensed pharmaceutical waste disposal
companies to ensure compliant handling of expired medications,
controlled substances, and clinical waste from in-store clinics.
Customer-facing medicine take-back programmes will encourage responsible
disposal of unused medications, reducing environmental contamination and
the risk of medicine abuse.
Packaging sustainability will be prioritised across the private label
range, targeting 80% recyclable packaging materials by Year 3 and
exploring refillable container programmes for high-volume personal care
products. Single-use plastic bags will be eliminated from all stores,
replaced with reusable bags sold at cost price.
13.3 Governance and Ethics
HealthPlus will adopt King IV governance principles from inception,
establishing a governance framework that exceeds the minimum
requirements for a private company. The Board will comprise a majority
of non-executive directors, including at least two independent members
with healthcare industry expertise. Board committees—Audit and Risk,
Remuneration, and Social and Ethics—will be constituted and operational
prior to the first store opening.
An independent compliance function will monitor adherence to the
Pharmacy Act, Medicines Act, SAPC regulations, SAHPRA requirements,
POPIA (data protection), and all applicable labour and tax legislation.
Whistleblower mechanisms will be established to enable confidential
reporting of ethical concerns, fraud, or regulatory non-compliance.
The Company will publish an annual integrated report from Year 2,
incorporating financial results, operational performance, social impact
metrics, and environmental sustainability reporting. This level of
transparency is unusual for a private company of HealthPlus’s size and
demonstrates the Company’s commitment to institutional-grade governance
standards.
13.4 Skills Development and Employment Impact
HealthPlus’s five-year plan will create approximately 575 direct
employment positions by Year 5, with an additional estimated 200–300
indirect jobs through supplier relationships, construction contractors,
and service providers. The Company’s skills development programme will
include an annual pharmacist bursary scheme sponsoring five pharmacy
students per year from Year 2, structured learnership programmes for
pharmacy assistants in compliance with SAPC training requirements,
retail management development programmes preparing store-level staff for
advancement to management roles, and digital literacy training for all
employees.
The Company will target a minimum of 75% black staff representation
across all levels, with specific targets for black women in management
positions. A dedicated transformation committee will monitor progress
against employment equity targets and recommend interventions where gaps
are identified.
13.5 Measuring Social Impact
HealthPlus will track and report on a comprehensive set of social
impact key performance indicators (KPIs) to demonstrate the Company’s
contribution to community health and economic development. These metrics
will be included in the annual integrated report and made available to
investors, lenders, and regulatory stakeholders.

These impact metrics are designed to satisfy the requirements of
impact-oriented investors, development finance institutions (DFIs), and
ESG-focused institutional capital providers. The Company will seek
independent verification of social impact data from Year 3, aligning
with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards and the
International Finance Corporation (IFC) Performance Standards where
applicable.
