Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG)

MMM commits to closed-loop water recycling, zero-waste-to-landfill and premium-efficiency energy use, while creating 85 permanent jobs in Year 1 and producing enough maize meal to feed roughly 600,000 South Africans a year…

9.1 Environmental Management

MMM is committed to responsible environmental stewardship. The facility will be designed and operated in compliance with the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA) and associated regulations. Key environmental commitments include:

Water Management: Closed-loop water recycling system targeting 80% water reuse in the conditioning process. Borehole water supplemented with municipal supply; wastewater treatment to SANS 241 standards.
Energy Efficiency: Installation of IE3/IE4 premium efficiency motors throughout the plant; LED lighting; variable frequency drives on fans and conveyors; target energy intensity of 55 kWh per tonne milled.
Waste Minimisation: Zero-waste-to-landfill target by Year 3. Maize milling waste (bran, germ, fines) is fully utilised as animal feed. Packaging waste recycled through extended producer responsibility programmes.
Air Quality: Dust extraction systems with baghouse filters achieving particulate emissions below 50 mg/Nm³ (below the NEM:AQA standard). Noise attenuation to below 65 dB at the site boundary.

9.2 Social Impact & Job Creation

The project is expected to create significant direct and indirect employment and contribute to community development in the Mpumalanga Highveld region:

Impact Category Year 1 Year 3 Year 5
Direct Permanent Jobs 85 110 130
Contract / Seasonal Jobs 20 35 45
Indirect Jobs (Supply Chain) 150 250 350
Local Procurement Spend (ZAR M) R45 R95 R125
Skills Training Investment (ZAR M) R1.2 R2.0 R2.5
CSI / Community Spend (ZAR M) R0.5 R1.5 R2.5

9.3 Governance Framework

MMM will implement a governance framework consistent with King IV principles, including:

  • Board of Directors comprising minimum 3 independent non-executive directors (including an independent chairperson).
  • Audit & Risk Committee, Social & Ethics Committee, and Remuneration Committee.
  • Annual independent audit by a registered auditing firm.
  • Quarterly board reporting with comprehensive management accounts.
  • Conflict of interest policy and related-party transaction disclosure requirements.
  • Whistleblower hotline managed by an independent service provider.

9.4 Food Security Contribution

By processing 54,000 tonnes of maize annually at full capacity, MMM will produce approximately 42,000 tonnes of finished maize meal products — sufficient to feed approximately 600,000 South Africans for one year (based on per capita consumption of 70kg/year). The project therefore makes a meaningful contribution to national food security objectives as outlined in the National Food and Nutrition Security Policy and the Integrated Food Security Strategy.
