Your NYDA Funding Plan From Here: Checklist, Contacts and FAQ

Most people try to start at the hardest point. The ones who succeed usually started somewhere easier and arrived at the grant already looking like a good bet.

Chapter 12Your plan from here

Roughly eleven times less contested than cash.2Get your records straightBusiness bank account, everything running through it, books that balance.3Trade for six monthsSix months of statements is the strongest single item in any application.4Apply for the grantItemised, quoted, within your threshold, training already done.5Become a supplierCorporate ESD and public procurement — where the real money is.

Each step makes the next one easier — and the last step is where the real money is.

The readiness scoreboard

Score yourself honestly. If you cannot tick at least seven of these, you are applying too early — and applying too early uses up months you could have spent becoming the kind of applicant who gets approved.

What to do this week

Table 7: Seven actions, in order
# Action Why now
1 Work out your age deadline Nine months before your 35th birthday. If it has passed, everything changes — go to Part 9 instead.
2 Check your turnover against R750 000 This decides whether the grant is relevant to you at all.
3 Open a business bank account You need it to be paid, and six months of statements is the strongest thing in any application.
4 Pull your credit report You are entitled to a free one each year. A credit check is run on every application.
5 Phone 0800 58 58 58 Ask about training and vouchers, confirm where to apply, and confirm your maximum grant amount.
6 Book the business management training Free, compulsory, and the thing most likely to hold your application up if you leave it.
7 Get written quotes For every single thing you intend to buy. This is what turns a vague request into a fundable one.

Table 8: How to reach the NYDA
Channel Detail
Call centre 0800 58 58 58 — toll free
Website www.nyda.gov.za — current brochures, criteria and branch list
Email info@nyda.gov.za
In person Full service branches in all nine provinces, plus district offices. Branch locations are listed on the website and in the Grant Programme brochure.
National Youth Service Applications have run through SAYouth.mobi rather than the grant channel. Confirm the current route.

Confirm these before you rely on them

Everything in this guide comes from published NYDA material, but rules change and brochures lag. Confirm the following before acting.

Verify with the NYDA directly

  • Your maximum grant amount, given the conflict described in Part 3
  • The current turnover ceiling for companies and for co-operatives
  • Whether the age rule is still nine months before your 35th birthday
  • Whether the resignation-from-employment condition still applies, and how
  • Where applications are currently submitted — branch, online portal, or both
  • Whether the programme is open, and whether any application window applies
  • Current voucher values and how many an entity can receive
  • Whether the National Youth Fund is receiving applications, and on what criteria

Protect yourself

A closing word

The honest summary is this. The NYDA grant is a small amount of money, awarded to a small number of businesses, wrapped in real conditions. If you are a young person running a micro-business in a township or a rural district, turning over less than R750 000, needing R30 000 for equipment you can point at and get a quote for — it is one of very few doors in this country that opens at all, and it is worth walking through.

If that is not you, the more useful conversation is about corporate supplier programmes, public sector procurement, development finance, or the free support that almost nobody asks for.

Either way, most of the work that makes a good grant application — a business bank account, six months of statements, clean books, written quotes, completed training — is work that makes your business stronger regardless of what any committee decides. That is the part nobody can take away from you, and it is the reason to start this week rather than when you feel ready.

FAQNYDA funding questions people actually ask

Table 9: Straight answers
Question Answer
Do I have to pay NYDA funding back? No. It is a grant, not a loan — provided you use it for the approved purpose and meet the conditions. Using it for something else is a breach.
Does it cost anything to apply? No. The application, the training and the mentorship are free. If someone is charging you to apply, you are paying for something you can do yourself.
Must my business be registered? The criteria contemplate both formal and informal micro-enterprises, including street traders and vendors. But you need a bank account in the entity’s name, and registration makes almost everything else easier. Confirm what your threshold requires.
Can I apply more than once? Yes. There is no appeal against a decision, but you can submit a fresh application — and a stronger one usually does better.
Can I get more than one NYDA grant? There is a stated lifetime cumulative limit of R250 000, with exceptions for co-operatives and a stated R300 000 for agriculture and technology projects. Plan your timing around it.
I am 34. Am I too late? You must apply nine months before your 35th birthday. Count back from your birthday. If that date has passed, the grant is closed to you — but most options in Part 9 have no age limit.
Do I really have to resign my job? If you are employed full time you may be required to resign and provide proof. Decide whether you would actually do that before you apply, not after approval.
My business partner is 38. Is that a problem? Yes. The business must be youth-owned and members must meet the citizenship and age requirements. Check your CIPC documents before applying and take proper advice on any restructuring.
Can I use it to buy a car for deliveries? No. Vehicles are excluded outright. This is the single most common wasted application.
Can I use it to pay off my business debt? No. Refinancing existing loans, replacing another lender and settling overdue SARS debt are all excluded.
How long does NYDA funding take? The published standards are 30 working days to process and 30 more to disburse — about three months from a complete application, plus your own preparation time before that.
Will they visit my business? Expect a due diligence assessment, and prepare for someone to come and look. Have your quotes to hand and know your own numbers.
What if I have a bad credit record? A credit check is run on every application and being under debt administration disqualifies you. Get your free credit report and deal with problems before applying.
I got funding from another agency. Does that matter? If you have benefited from another development finance institution above R500 000, you are excluded. Disclose it either way — being found out at due diligence is worse.
Is there a deadline or an application window? Practice has varied, and some programmes open periodically. Confirm whether applications are open before you build a timeline.
Is the R2.5 billion National Youth Fund open? It was announced in October 2025 and described as being operationalised. Confirm its status with the NYDA before planning around it — and note it is loans and equity, not a grant.
