Conclusion
The closing investment case, summarising why GreenH2 represents a compelling low-carbon ammonia, urea and industrial-hydrogen opportunity for equity investors, lenders and development-finance institutions.
GreenH2 Fertiliser Holdings proposes a nationally significant,
low-carbon nitrogen complex that converts South Africa’s structural
fertiliser-import dependence and decarbonisation imperative into a
diversified, bankable industrial investment. The Project pairs defensive
domestic demand — food security and mining inputs — with exportable
energy-transition upside in ammonia and hydrogen, underpinned by local
feedstock, renewable power and a supportive strategic-infrastructure
policy framework.
The base case delivers a project IRR of 22.3%, an NPV of R11.17bn at
a 14.5% discount rate, an equity IRR of 32.9%, and debt-service cover
that strengthens from 1.31x to 1.91x — metrics that comfortably meet
institutional bankability thresholds, with downside scenarios that
remain serviceable thanks to a deliberately conservative capital
structure and contracted offtake.
The R5.0 billion seed and development round is the catalytic step: it
funds the engineering, permitting, land and commercial agreements
required to reach financial close, at which point senior debt and
development-finance equity are drawn to build the complex. For investors
seeking scaled exposure to Africa’s food-security and energy-transition
themes within a disciplined, project-finance-grade structure, GreenH2
represents a compelling, asymmetric opportunity.
Commission a full bankable feasibility study and independent FEED;
finalise environmental authorisation; secure binding offtake covering ≥
60% of nameplate; complete an independently audited financial model; and
progress equity syndication and senior-debt term sheets toward financial
close.
