The production facility will be located on a 15-hectare site in the Polokwane municipal area of Limpopo Province. This location was selected following a rigorous site evaluation process against the following criteria:
-
Climate Suitability: Polokwane’s warm subtropical climate (average 20–28°C) supports year-round catfish production without heating costs, reducing energy expenditure by an estimated 15–20% versus temperate-zone alternatives.
-
Water Availability: Access to reliable borehole water and proximity to the Olifants River catchment ensures adequate freshwater supply for both RAS and pond operations.
-
Market Proximity: Located approximately 280km from Johannesburg (Gauteng), South Africa’s largest consumer market, via the N1 highway. Cold-chain deliveries to Gauteng are achievable within 3–4 hours.
-
Labour Economics: Limpopo offers significantly lower labour costs than Gauteng, with access to a large semi-skilled workforce. The project anticipates creating 45–65 direct jobs at full capacity.
-
Land Cost: Agricultural land in the Polokwane area trades at approximately R80,000–R120,000 per hectare, a fraction of peri-urban Gauteng pricing.
-
Infrastructure: Municipal services (water, electricity, roads) are available at the site. Solar backup systems will mitigate load-shedding risk.
