10.2 Production Process
Seed potato production follows a rigorous, multi-stage process designed to maintain genetic purity and phytosanitary integrity:

Tissue Culture Propagation – Virus-free plantlets are multiplied in a controlled laboratory environment from certified mother stock

Mini-Tuber Production – Tissue culture plantlets are grown in sterilised growing media in insect-proof greenhouses to produce Generation 0 mini-tubers

Field Multiplication – Mini-tubers are planted in certified fields for successive generations (G1, G2, G3) with strict isolation distances and crop rotation requirements

Inspection and Certification – Crops are inspected by DALRRD-accredited inspectors at multiple growth stages. Only crops meeting certification standards proceed to harvest

Harvest, Grading, and Storage – Harvested seed potatoes are graded by size, inspected for quality, and placed in cold storage (2–4°C) to maintain dormancy

Packaging and Distribution – Seed is packaged to customer specifications and distributed via temperature-controlled logistics

10.4 Quality Management System
Highland Elite will implement an integrated quality management system aligned with the South African Potato Seed Certification Scheme and international best practices. The system will cover field hygiene protocols, seed lot traceability from tissue culture to dispatch, cold chain integrity monitoring, internal auditing and continuous improvement processes, and compliance with GlobalG.A.P. standards by Year 3.
