Supply Chain Strategy

Securing consistent supply, logistics and cold chain, and supply-risk mitigation.

A reliable, consistent and welfare-compliant supply of
finishing-ready goats is the single most important operational
determinant of success. The Company’s supply strategy combines
contracted commercial supply, organised smallholder aggregation,
in-house feedlot buffering and a breeding-improvement programme.

9.1 Securing consistent supply

The historical failure of goat commercialisation in South Africa has
been driven less by demand than by inconsistent, fragmented supply.
KarooPrime Capretto addresses this directly through multi-season offtake
contracts, transparent grade-and-weight-based pricing, input and
veterinary support that lifts smallholder productivity, and feedlot
buffering that smooths seasonal and quality variability before
slaughter.

9.2 Logistics and cold chain

Live animals are moved from aggregation centres to feedlots and the
plant under welfare-compliant transport protocols that minimise stress
and shrinkage. Post-slaughter, an unbroken cold chain — chillers at the
plant, refrigerated vehicles and temperature-controlled distribution —
preserves quality, extends shelf life and meets the requirements of
formal retail and export customers. Logistics cost is modelled at
6.6–8.2% of revenue, improving with scale and route density.

9.3 Supply risk mitigation

  • Geographic diversification of sourcing across multiple provinces
to reduce drought and disease concentration risk.
  • Feedlot inventory buffering to decouple slaughter scheduling from
    farm-gate availability.
  • Breeding and genetics support to lift conception, kidding and
growth rates across the contracted base.
  • Incentive-based pricing that rewards consistent quality and
supply, aligning farmer behaviour with Company needs.
