Spaza Shop Support Fund: What You Actually Get

Up to R100 000 per shop, in a blend of grant and loan. The grant portion is money you never repay. Here is exactly how the split works, and what the money can buy.

Section 3How the R100 000 is made up

The fund’s own website sets out the package as up to R100 000 made of three parts: R40 000 as a straight grant, R50 000 as a blended grant and loan, and R10 000 of non-financial support such as training.

Government’s step-by-step guidance puts the same thing another way: funding above R50 000 is provided as 50% grant and 50% loan. Below R50 000 there is no loan portion at all.

On a full R100 000 award, roughly R65 000 is money you keep and about R25 000 is repayable, alongside R10 000 of training and support.

Section 4What the money can be used for

  • Stock purchases — including initial stock
  • Shop upgrades and infrastructure — shelving, refrigeration, security, hygiene improvements
  • Point-of-sale devices and digital payment systems
  • Business development tools and inventory management
  • Business training — financial management, digital literacy, credit management, compliance

The support is not only money. SEDFA and the NEF also provide training and compliance assistance, including help with formalising the business. The fund’s guidance encourages spending with accredited local suppliers whose goods meet the relevant regulatory requirements.
