Fall protection is the cheapest insurance in the business

OSHA fall protection requirements — guardrail systems, personal fall arrest, safety nets — add direct labor hours to every project, and contractors who absorb those hours internally reflect them in per-square labor rates. The temptation on a small residential job is to skip the setup because the roof is low and the crew is fast. The arithmetic argues otherwise. Class code 5551 is among the highest-rated classifications in construction precisely because of fall claim severity, and a single serious fall claim resets the experience modification rate for three years. This plan improves its workers’ compensation rate from 18.5 per cent of payroll to 16.0 per cent, worth $43,000 a year at Year 5 payroll, and that improvement exists only if the claims history supports it. Every harness in the business costs less than one month of the premium increase a single claim produces.
