Crownstone’s operations centre on a single integrated 55-hectare campus designed to deliver premium education and to sweat its assets across the school day, the weekend and the holidays. The campus brings together academic, boarding, sports and arts facilities, a conference centre and commercial spaces, supported by a 420-strong staff complement.
The campus
- Academic facilities — ECD, preparatory and senior schools, science and STEM labs, an AI-enabled learning environment and a library.
- Boarding — 600 beds across boys’, girls’ and international houses, with pastoral and catering infrastructure.
- Sports complex — fields, courts, a pool and clubhouses supporting eight codes and generating rental and events income.
- Arts centre — music, drama, dance and digital-media facilities, and a performance venue.
- Commercial & conference — a conference centre, event spaces and the school shop, monetised outside teaching hours.
Sustainable campus design
The campus is designed for sustainability and operating efficiency, water-wise landscaping, energy-efficient buildings and provision for on-site renewable generation, both to reduce long-run operating cost and to embody the environmental values the Group teaches. Sustainable design also lowers the campus’s exposure to utility-cost and load-shedding risk, a material operating consideration in South Africa.
Phased development
The campus is developed in phases to match capital deployment to enrolment. Phase 1 delivers the academic and boarding core and the essential sports and arts facilities needed to open and to enrol the first cohorts; Phase 2 expands facilities as enrolment scales toward capacity. Phasing reduces upfront capital, aligns spend with revenue, and limits the risk of building ahead of demand, a direct response to the sector’s history of over-building.
