Cryostead is committed to embedding environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles into the core of its business strategy. This commitment is not merely aspirational; it is a commercial imperative, as institutional investors and major corporate clients increasingly mandate ESG compliance from their supply chain partners.

13.1 Environmental

  • Solar-Powered Refrigeration: A 500 kWp rooftop solar photovoltaic system will be installed during Phase 2 (Year 3), reducing grid dependency by an estimated 15 to 20 percent and lowering the facility’s carbon footprint by approximately 500 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per annum.

  • Energy Efficiency: Ammonia-based refrigeration systems offer significantly lower global warming potential (GWP) compared to synthetic refrigerants. Variable-speed compressors and high-performance insulation further reduce energy consumption per pallet by an estimated 20 percent compared to industry average.

  • Food Waste Reduction: By providing reliable, uninterrupted cold chain services, the Company directly contributes to reducing post-harvest food losses, which are estimated at 30 to 40 percent of perishable production in developing markets.

  • Water Management: Rainwater harvesting system for non-potable uses; efficient condensation recovery from refrigeration systems.

13.2 Social

  • Job Creation: The facility will create 75 direct jobs in Year 1, growing to 106 by Year 5. An estimated 200 to 300 indirect jobs will be supported through construction, transport, and service providers.

  • Skills Development: Annual investment of approximately ZAR 1.2 million in training and development, including cold chain management certifications, forklift licensing, and management development programmes.

  • B-BBEE Compliance: The Company’s ownership structure, combined with procurement policies favouring qualifying small enterprises and employment equity targets, positions Cryostead for a Level 2 or Level 3 B-BBEE rating.

  • Community Engagement: Partnerships with local technical colleges for internship programmes; preferential local hiring policies; sponsorship of community food security initiatives.

13.3 Governance

  • Board Composition: An independent non-executive director will be appointed to the Board from Year 1, providing oversight and strategic guidance.

  • Financial Controls: IFRS-compliant financial reporting; annual external audit by a registered audit firm; quarterly management reporting to shareholders.

  • Risk Management: Formal enterprise risk management framework with quarterly Board-level review of key risk indicators.

  • Ethical Conduct: Code of ethics and anti-corruption policy applicable to all employees, directors, and contractors. Whistleblower hotline to be established.
