The steps in detail

Eight steps

  1. 1Prepare. Assemble the full document pack from Part 5 and check every expiry date. Do this first — the portal will ask for uploads as you go.
  2. 2Choose your product. Use the selector in Part 4 and confirm your choice with a branch adviser. Advice from SEDFA business advisers is free.
  3. 3Register on the SEDFA online application portal, or go into a branch if you would rather be walked through it. Existing portal users were migrated automatically.
  4. 4Submit the application form with all supporting documents attached. Keep your reference number and a copy of everything you uploaded.
  5. 5Respond fast to queries. If an assessor asks for something, aim to reply within 48 hours; files that go quiet slide down the queue.
  6. 6Assessment. Expect a credit check, possibly a site visit and an interview about your numbers. Be ready to defend your projections line by line.
  7. 7Decision. You will receive one of four outcomes — approved, approved with conditions, deferred pending more information, or declined, with reasons.
  8. 8Contracting and disbursement. Terms, security and repayment schedule are finalised, security is registered, and funds are released — often directly to a supplier rather than to you.
