Part 8 of 8 · Support and answers
Free SEDFA Support, Contacts and Common Questions
The merger folded SEDA’s business development services into the same organisation that lends the money. These services are free, they are underused, and using them before you apply demonstrates seriousness to an assessor.

Section 13Questions people actually ask
Is SEDFA funding a grant?
Mostly no. The majority of SEDFA money is a loan repayable with interest. Two programmes — TREP and SEMSP — include a capped grant portion, and separate grant windows open periodically.
Can I still apply to SEFA?
There is no separate SEFA to apply to. SEFA became part of SEDFA on 1 October 2024. Apply through SEDFA.
Can a start-up get funded?
Yes, but the bar is higher. You need a credible plan, evidence of a market and, in most cases, an owner contribution. Trading for six to twelve months first materially improves your odds.
Do I need collateral for a SEDFA loan?
Requirements are relaxed for smaller facilities and for some developmental products, but “relaxed” is not “none”. Asset finance is normally secured on the asset itself.
What if I have bad credit?
Judgments and defaults are a serious obstacle. Settle what you can, obtain clearance letters, and consider a co-applicant with a clean record.
How much can I get?
Direct lending runs from R50 000 to R15 million. Below R50 000 you are usually routed to a micro-finance intermediary. The amount offered depends on affordability, not on what you ask for.
How long does a SEDFA loan take?
Under R500 000 the stated target is 21 days to a decision. Larger facilities take longer, and high-demand programmes such as TREP have been reported at 60 to 90 working days from due diligence to disbursement. Responding quickly to queries is the biggest thing you control.
Can I apply for more than one product?
You can be assessed against several. Ask the branch to identify the cheapest programme you qualify for rather than defaulting to standard lending.
Is the interest rate negotiable?
The concessionary programme rates are set. Risk-priced direct lending has some room, and stronger security or a larger owner contribution can improve the margin.
What happens if I cannot repay?
Speak to SEDFA before you default. There are business recovery and viability programmes for existing borrowers in difficulty. Defaults are recorded and pursued like any other credit agreement.
