Social Impact and Sustainability

SparkleClean SA is committed to being a force for positive social change. In a country with 31.4% official unemployment (and 42.1% including discouraged workers), the creation of quality, formal employment in the cleaning sector carries significant social value. The company targets creating…

12.1 Job Creation and Community Impact

SparkleClean SA is committed to being a force for positive social change. In a country with 31.4% official unemployment (and 42.1% including discouraged workers), the creation of quality, formal employment in the cleaning sector carries significant social value. The company targets creating 12–16 jobs in Year 1, scaling to 35–45 by Year 3. Each position is a formal, full-time job with benefits — not a gig position — contributing to South Africa’s formal employment figures and providing workers with income stability, UIF coverage, and access to training.

12.2 Women’s Empowerment

The domestic cleaning sector in South Africa employs predominantly women, many of whom face economic marginalisation. SparkleClean’s commitment to above-market wages, benefits, and career development specifically targets the economic empowerment of women. The company’s training programme includes not only cleaning skills but also financial literacy, personal budgeting, and leadership development.

12.3 Environmental Sustainability

SparkleClean SA’s environmental commitments include exclusive use of biodegradable, non-toxic cleaning products sourced from South African manufacturers, a goal of eliminating single-use plastic packaging from the supply chain by 2029, water-efficient cleaning techniques (critical in water-scarce South Africa), route optimisation software to minimise vehicle fuel consumption and carbon emissions, and partnership with Unilever’s Sunlight refill programme (Skubu stations) for cleaning product refills where available.

12.4 Skills Development

The company will invest 1.5–2% of payroll in skills development through accredited NQF-aligned cleaning and hygiene courses, first-aid and safety certification, supervisory and leadership training for team leaders, financial literacy workshops in partnership with local NPOs, and driver’s licence attainment support for eligible staff.

12.5 Measuring Social Impact

SparkleClean SA will track and report on social impact metrics annually. These include the number of formal jobs created (cumulative), average employee income versus the national minimum wage, percentage of female employees, employee training hours per person per year, staff retention rates as a proxy for job satisfaction, number of employees who obtain new qualifications or certifications, and community partnerships and sponsorships supported. The company intends to publish an annual Social Impact Report from Year 2, which will be shared with investors, partners, and stakeholders. This transparency reinforces the brand’s authenticity and can be leveraged in marketing communications.

12.6 Sustainable Development Goals Alignment

SparkleClean SA’s operations contribute to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

SDG 1: No Poverty Above-minimum-wage formal employment with benefits for semi-skilled workers
SDG 5: Gender Equality Predominantly female workforce with equal pay, leadership development, and safe working conditions
