Market Analysis

The global poultry feed market was valued at approximately USD 244 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 339 billion by 2032, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.8%. This growth is driven by rising global protein…

3.1 Global Poultry Feed Market

The global poultry feed market was valued at approximately USD 244 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 339 billion by 2032, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.8%. This growth is driven by rising global protein consumption, industrialisation of poultry farming in emerging markets, regulatory pressure on antibiotic usage, and continuous improvement in feed conversion efficiency.

The Africa poultry feed market was valued at approximately USD 14.5 billion in 2025 and is expected to grow to USD 18.05 billion by 2031, representing a CAGR of 3.74%. South Africa anchors this market with the continent’s most advanced feed manufacturing base, while Nigeria (28% market share) and Ethiopia (7.6% CAGR) represent the fastest-growing demand centres.

3.2 South African Poultry Industry Overview

South Africa’s poultry industry is the largest sub-sector within the country’s agricultural economy. The sector is responsible for 65% of all animal protein consumed domestically and contributes approximately 18% of total agricultural output, supporting more than 134,000 direct and indirect jobs. The poultry sector’s total value is estimated at approximately ZAR 63 billion.

Key structural characteristics of the South African poultry industry include:

  • High vertical integration: Four major producers — Astral Foods, RCL Foods, Country Bird Holdings, and Sovereign Foods — collectively account for approximately 63% of chicken production.

  • Astral Foods and RCL Foods alone have consistently held more than 35% of the local broiler market since 2015, and close to 50% when exports are excluded.

  • Broiler feed formulations account for 62.25% of the African poultry feed market, reflecting short grow-out cycles and standardised demand.

  • Pellet form feed leads with 45.78% revenue share, followed by crumble (growing at 7.15% CAGR) and mash formats.

3.3 South African Animal Feed Industry Structure

The South African animal feed industry is well established and highly scientific, producing approximately 13 million metric tons (MMT) annually. It is divided into three groups: dedicated feed manufacturers (60% of production), feedlot operators (on-farm production), and informal feed milling.

Poultry feed is the dominant category, with broiler and layer feed representing more than 40% of total manufactured feed sales, totalling over 5 MMT annually. This is followed by cattle and sheep feedlot feed (3.2 MMT), dairy feed (2.6 MMT), and pig feed (1.2 MMT).

3.4 Feed Manufacturing Concentration

The feed manufacturing segment is highly concentrated, with three major integrated producers controlling approximately 75% of all poultry feed production:

Company Feed Division Parent Group Est. Market Share
Meadow Feeds Feed Manufacturing Astral Foods Ltd ~30%
Epol Feed Manufacturing RCL Foods Ltd ~25%
Afgri Animal Feeds Feed Manufacturing Afgri Group ~20%
Nova Feeds Feed Manufacturing Quantum Foods ~8%
Independent Mills Various Various ~17%

This concentration level — where 30 registered manufacturers operate but three firms produce 75% of output — represents both a barrier to entry and an opportunity. Independent and emerging poultry farmers are often compelled to purchase feed from the same integrated companies against whom they compete in the final poultry product market, creating inherent conflicts of interest and pricing disadvantages. The Competition Commission’s Poultry Market Inquiry launched in September 2025 is specifically examining whether this vertical integration distorts competition.

3.5 Target Market Segments

Greenfields will initially focus on three primary market segments within the target geography of Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and North West:

Segment A: Independent Commercial Farmers (60% of Revenue)

Established, non-integrated commercial poultry producers operating between 20,000 and 200,000 birds, who currently purchase feed from integrated competitors. These farmers seek quality feed at competitive prices from a supplier who is not also a competitor in the poultry market.

Segment B: Emerging & Smallholder Farmers (25% of Revenue)

Government-supported emerging farmers and cooperative operations with flocks of 1,000 to 20,000 birds. This segment is growing rapidly due to transformation initiatives, agricultural support grants, and rural development programmes. These customers require technical support, smaller order quantities, flexible credit terms, and training in feed management.

Segment C: Contract Growers & Institutional Buyers (15% of Revenue)

Contract growers for major integrators seeking supplementary feed supply, as well as agricultural colleges, government livestock projects, and wholesale distributors. This segment provides stable, predictable volume.
