2.1 Size and structure
Eggs are the cheapest complete animal protein available in South Africa and demand is structurally resilient. The gross value of egg production was around R11.5 billion in 2021/22, and total production reached 562 000 tons in 2022. Combined farm income from poultry meat and eggs reached R87.95 billion in 2024, up from R79.60 billion in 2023 — growth of 10.5 per cent as the sector recovered.

Production is geographically concentrated |
Production is geographically concentrated and those five provinces produce about 82 per cent of South Africa’s eggs. A new entrant located near a metropolitan market but outside the densest production clusters has a genuine logistics advantage on freshness and delivery cost, which is precisely the position the direct and local-trade channel in Section 11 depends on.
2.2 The supply shock and the recovery
The market a new entrant is joining in 2026 has just been through the most disruptive period in its history. The 2023 outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza removed a very large share of the national layer flock. Egg supply contracted, prices rose sharply, and many producers left the industry permanently.
Recovery followed. Producers reported layer flocks rebuilding through 2024 and 2025 as replacement bird availability normalised, with the South African Poultry Association forecasting that production would return to pre-2023 levels by the middle of 2025. Quantum Foods reported a significant improvement in egg and poultry sales over a four-month period as its layer flock rebuilt, with no load shedding and no new outbreaks, and guided to lower egg selling prices as supply recovered.
2.3 Feed is the other half of the story
Layer feed averaged R5 625 per ton in 2024, a decline of 6.4 per cent on the previous year, which the South African Poultry Association attributed to increased maize and soybean production. Feed prices have been on a declining trend since May 2023, and the United States Department of Agriculture attributes projected growth in South African poultry production to lower feed costs alongside recovery from avian influenza.
Feed represents 56.2 per cent of direct costs in this plan and 32.4 per cent of revenue at Year 5. No other single decision in the business matters as much as how feed is bought, which is why Section 8 treats it as a strategy rather than as a purchase and why the Stage 5 capital programme includes an on-farm feed mill.
