SRD Status Check: What Each Status Actually Means

Check at srd.sassa.gov.za, by dialling *134*7737#, or by calling 0800 60 10 11. Here is what the words on your screen actually mean, and what to do about each one.

SRD grant status meanings
Status What it means What to do
PENDING Checks are still running. It is not a rejection, and it is not a queue you can jump. Nothing. Wait. Reapplying resets nothing and can flag your file.
APPROVED You qualify for that month. Only that one month — next month is assessed again. Wait for a payment date, which follows once your bank account is verified.
DECLINED The portal shows a reason code next to the decline. Find the exact reason first, then appeal against that specific reason.
BANK DETAILS PENDING You are approved but unpaid. SASSA cannot verify your account. Re-enter your banking details on the portal. Check the account name matches your ID exactly.
IDENTITY VERIFICATION FAILED Your details do not match Home Affairs records. Appealing will not fix this. Correct your record at a Home Affairs office, then apply again.
REFERRED Sent for manual review. Something needs a human. Wait — it usually resolves in the next cycle. Do not submit a new application.

DeclinedDeclined? Match the reason to the fix

Declines run into the hundreds of thousands each month, and many are database false positives rather than genuine ineligibility — that mismatch is the heart of the court challenge to these rules.

Find your exact reason before you appeal, because a generic appeal gets declined again.

SRD decline reasons and what to do about each
Reason shown What it means What to do
Alternative income source identified Money came into your account that month Appeal. Explain the deposit — a loan, a gift, a refund — and attach the bank statement page
UIF registered You appear on the UIF database Deregister at the Department of Employment and Labour first, then appeal
NSFAS registered You are recorded as a funded student Get written proof you are no longer funded, then appeal
Government payroll Your ID sits on a state payroll Get a service termination letter from the department, then appeal
Existing SASSA grant Another grant is paid for you Only appeal if the grant is for a child, not for you
Identity verification failed Your details do not match Home Affairs Fix it at Home Affairs. An appeal will not work
Age criteria not met You are under 18 or over 60 Nothing to appeal. Over 60, apply for the Older Persons Grant instead
Deceased Home Affairs has you recorded as dead Go to Home Affairs in person with your ID. This is a records error and it does happen
