How to Appeal a Declined SRD Grant

Appeals do not go to SASSA. They go to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals, which sits outside SASSA and reviews the decision fresh. It is free, and you do not need a lawyer.

Every declined month is a separate case with its own clock. Confirm the current window on the portal, as the regulations are subject to the ongoing court case.

The processThe appeal, step by step

Seven steps

  1. 1Go to srd.dsd.gov.za/appeals. Note this is dsd, not sassa — the tribunal sits under the Department of Social Development.
  2. 2Enter your ID number and the cellphone number on your application. Verify the OTP.
  3. 3Select the declined month. One appeal per month.
  4. 4Choose the reason that matches your decline code exactly.
  5. 5Write a short, specific statement: name the month, name the reason, explain the evidence.
  6. 6Attach proof if you have it. Use certified copies where documents are involved.
  7. 7Submit and screenshot the confirmation. Do not lodge the same appeal twice — it does not speed up the review.

Do and do notWhat helps an appeal, and what wastes it

This helps

  • Name the specific month you are appealing
  • Quote the exact decline reason back
  • Explain what the deposit actually was
  • Attach the bank statement page showing it
  • Lodge each declined month separately
  • Screenshot the confirmation

This wastes your appeal

  • A general plea that you are unemployed and need help
  • Appealing a reason different from the one given
  • Saving up several months to appeal together
  • Lodging the same appeal twice
  • Appealing an identity verification failure
  • Paying anyone to appeal on your behalf
