Do I have to reapply every month?

No. Apply once. The system reassesses you automatically each month. Reapplying when you do not need to can flag your file for fraud review. The only reasons to apply again are if you cancelled your application, or if you were permanently disqualified and your circumstances have since changed.

My status has said pending for weeks. What do I do?

Wait. Pending means checks are still running and it can take up to three months in a backlog. Nothing you do speeds it up. If it has been over three months, call 0800 60 10 11 with your ID number ready and ask for a manual trace.

I am approved but there is no payment date.

This is almost always bank verification. It usually takes 7 to 14 working days after approval. If nothing appears after three weeks, re-enter your banking details on the portal and check the account name matches your ID exactly. Then call the helpline.

Can I get the SRD grant and the child support grant?

Yes. A child support grant is paid for the child, not for you, so it does not disqualify you. What disqualifies you is a grant paid for your own support — an older persons, disability or war veterans grant.

I am 61. Can I still apply?

No, the SRD grant stops at 60. Apply for the Older Persons Grant instead, which pays R2 400 a month from April 2026, rising to R2 420 once you turn 75. That application is done at a SASSA office, not online.

Someone occasionally sends me money. Will that stop my grant?

If the total landing in your account in a month reaches R624, yes — that month will be declined. This is the single most common reason for declines. The High Court ruled in January 2025 that this threshold is unconstitutional and that gifts and once-off payments should be excluded, but government appealed that ruling in January 2026, so the rule still stands for now. If it happens to you, appeal and explain the deposit.

Is the R350 grant ending?

Not for now. Funding is confirmed to 31 March 2027, with R36.4 billion allocated in the 2026 Budget. Government has said it was never meant to be permanent, and a longer-term replacement — variously described as basic income support or a livelihoods grant — is under discussion. Nothing has replaced it yet.

Why is it still R370 when other grants went up?

Seven of the eight SASSA grants received an above-inflation increase from April 2026 — the older persons, disability and care dependency grants rose to R2 400, and the child support grant to R580. The SRD grant was left at R370 for a third year. Treasury has argued that raising it or widening eligibility would cost between R70.6 billion and R139 billion a year and is unaffordable.

Does it cost anything to apply or appeal?

No. Applying, checking your status and appealing are all completely free, on official channels. Anyone charging you a fee for any of these is taking your money for something you can do yourself.
