Sustainability, ESG and Social Impact
Industrial hemp is widely recognised as one of the most environmentally beneficial crops available. GreenSavanna will leverage hemp’s inherent sustainability characteristics while implementing additional environmental management practices:
15.1 Environmental Sustainability
Industrial hemp is widely recognised as one of the most environmentally beneficial crops available. GreenSavanna will leverage hemp’s inherent sustainability characteristics while implementing additional environmental management practices:
-
Carbon Sequestration: Hemp absorbs approximately 1.63 tonnes of CO₂ per tonne of hemp grown, making it a net carbon-negative crop. The Company’s 500-hectare operation at full scale will sequester an estimated 4,000–6,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually.
-
Soil Regeneration: Hemp’s deep root system (up to 2.5 metres) breaks up compacted soil, improves soil structure, and contributes organic matter through leaf fall and root decomposition.
-
Low Chemical Inputs: Hemp requires significantly fewer pesticides and herbicides than conventional crops, reducing chemical runoff and groundwater contamination.
-
Water Efficiency: The Company will implement precision irrigation systems (drip and centre-pivot) with soil moisture monitoring to minimise water usage, targeting water consumption of 400–500mm per growing cycle.
15.2 Social Impact and B-BBEE
The Company is committed to meaningful social impact and broad-based economic participation. Key social impact initiatives include a target of 80% local employment from surrounding communities, skills development and agricultural training programmes for farm workers, supplier development programmes supporting local SMMEs, and enterprise development contributions to emerging hemp farmers in the region. The Company targets B-BBEE Level 2 contributor status by Year 2, supported by Ms Nkosi’s 35% equity participation and a comprehensive B-BBEE implementation plan.
15.3 Governance
The Company’s governance framework will be aligned with the King IV Report on Corporate Governance principles, with specific emphasis on ethical leadership, stakeholder engagement, transparent reporting, and risk management. The Board of Directors will include independent non-executive representation, and sub-committees for Audit and Risk, Social and Ethics, and Remuneration will be constituted within the first 12 months.
