SWOT Analysis

The SWOT analysis – the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats underpinning NexaWave.

Strengths Weaknesses
Pure open-access neutrality maximises ISP participation and penetration velocity No operating history, no footprint, no ISP relationships at launch
Township-first positioning targets genuine white space and DFI capital Extreme capital intensity: R17.9bn deployed for R2.9bn terminal EBITDA
Long-life annuity assets with high switching costs and decades of revenue Second-round funding gap: R11.5bn raise does not complete the R19.8bn build
Multiple monetisation lines over one physical network (Home/Business/Metro/Reach/SmartCity) Negative free cash flow in every plan year; returns are back-loaded to exit
Opportunities Threats
Coverage–adoption gap: millions of passed homes unconnected, home penetration only 17.4% Overbuild competition from Maziv, Openserve and low-cost township disruptors
Township & secondary-town white space with proven affordable-fibre demand Municipal wayleave delays — the single most common cause of fibre build slippage
Policy backbone (Broadband Infraco, SA Connect) & anchor-tenancy contracts Capital-market conditions for the R7bn second round from FY2029
Data-centre interconnect, IoT and smart-city adjacencies Infrastructure theft & vandalism; currency/rate exposure on imported equipment

The SWOT resolves to a capital-allocation thesis: NexaWave’s
structural strengths (open access, township focus, annuity assets) are
real and durable, but every weakness and threat is a variant of the same
problem — this is an enormous, front-loaded capital bet whose success
depends on passing the right homes, connecting them fast enough, and
securing the second funding round before the build outruns the balance
sheet.
