Technology Infrastructure

The technology infrastructure, the network architecture and the fibre platform underpinning NexaWave.

Network architecture

  • Access: GPON at launch migrating to XGS-PON for symmetrical
multi-gigabit capability, future-proofing the passive base against
    bandwidth growth.
  • Metro & backbone: carrier-grade metro-ethernet rings and
dark-fibre backbone with redundant routing for enterprise SLAs and
    carrier backhaul.
  • Edge & interconnect: carrier-neutral interconnection points
and edge data infrastructure enabling data-centre and content-provider
    peering.
  • Operations: 24/7 network operations centres with AI-driven
monitoring, predictive maintenance and automated fault
    isolation.
  • OSS/BSS: automated ISP provisioning, wholesale billing, and
equal-access order management via open APIs.
Layer Technology Rationale
Passive infrastructure Single-mode fibre, ducts, poles, hand-holes 20-year+ economic life; the durable annuity asset
Active access GPON → XGS-PON OLTs/ONTs Symmetrical multi-gig; 7-year refresh cycle
Metro transport Metro ethernet, DWDM backbone Enterprise SLAs, dark-fibre & backhaul revenue
Smart access IoT gateways, CCTV/traffic backhaul SmartCity municipal contracts
Monitoring AI-driven NMS, predictive maintenance Uptime, theft detection, opex efficiency

Technology systems absorb R450 million of the raise, with the vast
majority of capital going into passive civil infrastructure — the source
of the R6,200–R13,750 cost-per-home range. Approximately 10% of capex is
short-life active electronics (7-year depreciation); the remaining ~90%
is long-life passive infrastructure (20-year depreciation), which is why
the asset base compounds to R19.8 billion gross / R17.8 billion
net
by FY2031 while the annual depreciation charge remains
modest relative to the asset value.
